  • Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 trees.
  • The average British family throws away 6 trees worth of paper in their household bin in a year.
  • Over a million tonnes of newspapers are thrown away every year in the UK.
  • On average every person in the UK gets through 38kg of newspapers a year.
  • The UK uses a forest the size of Wales every year in paper.
  • A 50 percent increase in worldwide paper consumption is expected by 2010.
  • 115 billion sheets of paper are used annually for personal computers.
  • 700 pounds of paper are consumed by the average American each year.
  • 10,000 trees are cut down annually in China to make holiday cards.
  • 3 cubic yards of landfill space can be saved by one ton of recycled paper.
  • Experts estimate that the last remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years.
  • U.S. per capita consumption of paper is 681 pounds per year! This means that if one 30 year old pine tree only produces 117 pounds of paper-THEN WE ARE EACH USING APPROXIMATELY 7 TREES A YEAR!
  • Forests store 50% of the world's terrestrial carbon.
  • Half the world's forests have already been cleared or burned, and 80% of what's left has been seriously degraded.
  • The paper industry is the 4th largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions among United States manufacturing industries, and contributes 9% of the manufacturing sector's carbon emissions.
  • If the United States cut office paper use by just 10% it would prevent the emission of 1.6 million tons of greenhouse gases -- the equivalent of taking 280,000 cars off the road.
  • In 2003, only 48.3% of office paper was recovered for recycling.
  • Waste paper which is dumped in landfill sites gradually rots down and produces methane, which is a dangerous greenhouse gas.
  • The average family uses 6 trees worth of paper each year.
  • About 25% of what we throw away is paper.
  • The UK imports 60% of the wood fibre we use to make paper and card. The further the fibre travels the more money and fuel are used.
